A masked bandit.

The masked bandit!

Katzya came inside the house tonight very up set because we had a raccoon out by the garage.  She said she scared it back on top of the shed, but that I needed to come look at it.  When I went outside I realized how close to my chickens and ducks he was.  He has been sleeping in the neighbor's shed which is 20 feet from my Duck Hut.  This is making me very uneasy.  Tomorrow I am going to set a trap with hopes of catching him!

Katzya was using a football to ward off the raccoon!

  1. That's our biggest problem, raccoon and opossum proofing the coop. We have a new one coming around too, young and aggressive. We're going to have to take care of him. He's already got the lid off the food and was up at the door.

There's an old one that we don't worry about. She's blind in one eye and leaves the chickens alone, in fact she comes out early since she can't compete with her peers. She can stay but the new one will be up on our porch pretty soon eating the cat's left overs. I don't want to take a chance of my granddaughter surprising him and getting bit.

  2. I am not sure what to do with this little critter! Evidentally he lives in the neighbor's shed and has been there for quite some time. My ducks pen would be easy to get into if he really wanted to becasue there is no top on it. (I know ducks are much bigger than chickens, but I would assume he would still try to kill them if he was looking for food.) I am almost inclined to let him stay if he is going to not eat my chickens/ducks. I worry if I wipe him out then the next thing to move into the shed might not be so nice!
